The course: history, a bridge, and a dreaded climb

All distances share the historic Western States Trail and the K2 training hill; the 50K goes further by crossing into additional Auburn SRA terrain.

No Hands Bridge and the K2 training hill

Every distance touches the Western States Trail, crossing the historic No Hands Bridge before tackling the K2 training hill, one of the toughest climbs in the area. The 8K and Heavy Half both include killer singletrack along the American River canyons and banks; the Half continues past No Hands Bridge and up K2 toward Cool, California.

The Furious 50K: further into Auburn SRA

Not to be outdone by the K2 training hill, the Furious 50K extends the adventure by crossing Highway 49 to traverse the Wendell T. Robie Trail, continuing to explore the Auburn State Recreation Area beyond what the shorter distances see.

Overlook Hill, then 50 flat meters to the finish

Every distance finishes the same way: a climb up the punishing Overlook Hill, then a brief, well-earned reward, 50 meters of perfectly flat path to the finish line.

Pacing strategy for K2 and Overlook Hill

With a named, dreaded climb in the middle of the course and another one at the very end, this is not a race to save all your effort for the finish line sprint.

Respect K2 the first time you see it

A grade-adjusted pace target built for the K2 training hill's actual grade gives you an honest number for what is sustainable, rather than what feels right in the moment. Runners who fly up K2 on adrenaline alone often pay for it well before Overlook Hill arrives.

Bank something for the Overlook Hill finish

A vert-aware finish prediction that accounts for both K2 and the closing Overlook Hill climb is far more honest than a flat-course pace estimate. Check it against the 8.5 hour cutoff early enough on the 50K to adjust your effort, not just after Overlook Hill has already taken its toll.

Fueling strategy for a cold January morning

A 7:30 AM January start in the Sierra foothills usually means a cold beginning that warms up considerably by the time you reach K2 and Overlook Hill.

Carbs: fuel through K2, not just after it

Aim for roughly 45 to 75 grams of carbohydrate per hour on the 50K. K2 hits early in the race, and it is tempting to focus entirely on the climb and forget fueling, but that sets up a harder second half once the Wendell T. Robie Trail extension arrives.

Sodium: layer for a cold start and a warmer finish

Sodium in the 300 to 700 mg per liter range covers most runners. Plan your clothing and hydration for a cold 7:30 AM start that can warm up meaningfully by the time you reach Overlook Hill.

No Hands Trail Run FAQ

How hard is the No Hands Trail Run 50K?

The Furious 50K earns its name: 31.3 miles with about 5,550 feet of gain, running along the historic Western States Trail, out to No Hands Bridge, and up one of the toughest climbs in the area, the dreaded K2 training hill. Every distance also finishes with a punishing climb of its own, Overlook Hill, right before the flat 50-meter path to the finish line.

How much climbing is in the No Hands Trail Run?

The Furious 50K carries about 5,550 feet of gain over 31.3 miles, roughly 177 feet per mile, with the K2 training hill as its signature climb. The course is varied and far from monotonous: all distances share the demanding K2 climb, and the 50K extends further by crossing Highway 49 to traverse the Wendell T. Robie Trail through the Auburn State Recreation Area.

How should I fuel for the No Hands Trail Run?

A January date in the Sierra foothills near Auburn typically means cold morning starts that can warm up considerably by midday, so layer your plan accordingly. Aim for roughly 45 to 75 grams of carbohydrate per hour on the 50K, and sodium in the 300 to 700 mg per liter range. Given the K2 climb hits early in every distance, make sure you are fueling before and during that section rather than waiting until after the hardest climbing is behind you. Build your numbers with the free ultra fueling calculator before race day.

What are the cutoffs for the No Hands Trail Run?

The Furious 50K carries an 8.5 hour time limit, and all runners must be off the course by 4:00 PM regardless of their 7:30 AM start time. Given the terrain includes the demanding K2 climb and the Wendell T. Robie Trail extension, that window has real margin built in but should not be treated as unlimited.

What is the terrain like on the No Hands Trail Run course?

Both the 8K and Heavy Half include killer singletrack trails along the banks and canyons of the American River, with the Half crossing the historic No Hands Bridge, climbing K2, then heading toward Cool, California. The 50K adds crossing Highway 49 to explore the Wendell T. Robie Trail deeper into the Auburn State Recreation Area. Every distance finishes by climbing the punishing Overlook Hill before the flat final stretch to the finish.

Is the No Hands Trail Run a good first ultra?

The K2 training hill and finishing Overlook Hill climb make this a genuine test even at shorter distances, so the 8K or Heavy Half are better entry points than the Furious 50K for a first-time trail runner. If you have some hill training under your belt and want a taste of the historic Western States Trail without the full 50K commitment, the Heavy Half is a strong choice.
