The course: fast downhill start, then the Newton hills

Boston drops from about 490 feet in Hopkinton to about 10 feet at the finish, a net downhill course that runs point-to-point through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, and Brookline before finishing on Boylston Street.

The first 16 miles: fast, downhill, and the real trap of this course

The race drops roughly 300 feet in the first 4 miles alone, and the downhill grade continues, on and off, for most of the first 16 miles. It feels easy. That is exactly the problem: runners who let gravity pull them to a pace faster than their real fitness arrive at the Newton hills with quads that have already absorbed 16 miles of downhill pounding, and pay for it in the second half.

The Newton hills, miles 16-21, and Heartbreak Hill near mile 20.5

Right after the Wellesley "scream tunnel" around miles 12-13, the course turns from downhill to a set of four rolling climbs through Newton, arriving at mile 16 and running through mile 21. The last and best known is Heartbreak Hill, a roughly 88-foot climb over about 0.4 miles cresting near mile 20.5. On paper it is a modest hill. In the race, it lands right where accumulated downhill fatigue makes every incline feel steeper than it is.

After Heartbreak: downhill again into Boston

Once you clear the Newton hills, the course turns downhill again through Brookline into Boston, finishing on Boylston Street. Because the course is point-to-point and net downhill, Boston is not eligible for record purposes the way a certified flat loop is, but it runs fast for anyone who manages the first-half downhill honestly and has something left for the climb through Newton.

Boston is the marquee example of a qualifier-based marathon, and the qualifying process is more layered than "run the standard and you're in."

Meeting the standard only lets you apply

The BAA sets age-and-gender graded qualifying standards. Running under your standard qualifies you to submit an application, not a guaranteed entry. Because more qualified applicants apply than there are spots, the BAA applies a rolling cutoff buffer each year: for the 2026 race, only runners at least 4 minutes 34 seconds faster than their own standard were accepted. That buffer moves year to year depending on how many people apply, so the real bar is often well under the posted standard.

Charity, invitational, and registration timing

Outside the qualifier path, charity programs with fundraising minimums and a smaller allotment of sponsor and city invitational bibs fill out the rest of the roughly 30,000-entrant field, which in practice ran larger once qualifiers, charity runners, and invitationals were all counted for 2026, over 32,000 that year. For the 2027 race, qualifier registration runs September 14-18, 2026 within the BAA's Athletes' Village platform, with applications accepted until 5:00 p.m. ET on that Friday, so plan your qualifying attempt well ahead of that week.

Pacing strategy for the downhill trap

The single biggest pacing mistake at Boston is treating the first 16 miles as free speed. They are not free. Every second you take out of your legs on the downhills, you pay back on the Newton hills.

Hold your effort on the downhills, not your pace

A flat-course pace target does not work on a net-downhill course with a hard uphill stretch in the second half. Run the first 16 miles by effort, close to your goal marathon effort, and let the downhill grade produce a pace that is naturally a bit faster than flat, rather than chasing a number that feels easy because gravity is doing the work.

Bank nothing for the Newton hills, save legs instead

Heartbreak Hill and the three rollers before it do not need banked time, they need legs that have not been trashed by 16 miles of overpaced downhill running.
